Hedge trimming in the Laval, Blainville and North Shore area.

ProHedge is a family company which specializes in cedar hedge trimming for residential and commercial projects. We pride ourselves on our courteous and expert service - you and your neighbours will be delighted with the fresh look of your yard.

The right cut: Trimming your cedar hedges

The hedge trimming services offered by ProHedge begin in April and end in September to allow time for your hedge to acclimatize to the cold winter. Thanks to our specialized and well-honed equipment, our gardeners make clean cuts which promote rapid healing of your cedar hedge. This clean cut will minimize disease as well as the stress associated with evaporation from your cedar hedge. In this way, your hedge will retain all the energy needed to continue to grow naturally.

ProHedge specialists trim from one-third to one-half of the year’s new growth. Since the cedar is a conifer, cutting down to the “old wood” of the previous year would stop regrowth. A cut that is too severe or poorly done can leave bare crowns or large gaps in your cedar hedge for several years; in some cases the hedge may never recover. It is therefore recommended to have your hedges trimmed before they become too tall or voluminous. Choosing to maintain your cedar hedge annually is a smart and economical way to maintain your landscape. For our Quebec climate, the recommended shape is slightly conical at the top to prevent the accumulated snow from crushing and breaking the crown. This shape also provides uniform access to sunshine throughout your hedge, promoting it’s health from tip to base.

The right amount of fertiliser under your cedar hedges

Would you like to have fuller, richer hedges? In addition to precision trimming, ProHedge offers a range of fertilisation options. We use a compost for springtime application which is high in nitrogen and which favours the growth of rich green foliage. We may also use granular fertilizer adapted to the month of application. The specific nutrient requirements of your hedge - nitrogen (foliage), phosphorus (root) and potassium (fruit) – will vary throughout the growing season. Paradoxically, adding too much compost will damage your cedars and make them brown.

We make the most of the trimmings from your cedar hedge

Once your hedges have been trimmed, our team will pick up all of the cut branches and provide them to companies which specialize in the production of cedar essential oil. You will participate in the development of a local, ecological company while minimizing waste and honouring our planet.

In times of drought we recommend watering your cedar hedge every five days as well as after a trim to avoid the stress of evapotranspiration. Drip hoses are a great solution for even watering. If you have just planted a young cedar hedge, it will be important to water it in the fall to protect it from the stress of winter desiccation (dryness due to the cold, dry winter air).

The same cut for all types of cedar hedge

Regardless of the height or the variety of cedar that adorns your yard, (Thuya occcidentalis; 9 m Fastigiata, 8m Nigra, 4m Smaragd, 4m Brandon or 4m Techni, etc...), the fundamentals remain the same: Have your hedges trimmed annually and give them a slightly conical shape at the top. Following these two tips will help avoid etiolation, increase the density of the foliage, promote optimal sunshine and create the desired intimacy of your property.
